After all these years,
In an unguarded moment of playful banter,
when you ask me if I love you,
I squeeze your hand and smile…
those three words
Are a mere reflection
Of what I feel inside.
Our love has come a long way
From the initial flutter of the heart
To the blinding sunshine that drowned us
In the euphoria
Of our epiphany
Of being in love…
My heart now beats like a quiet prayer
Rising and falling like the ocean
That goes beyond the questions
And answers of words…
It holds the quiet moments
Of what is left unspoken
Like when I hug you from behind
At the middle of the night
And you pull me closer
And kiss my palm.
That kiss means more to me
than the thousand
Kisses we shared under clear skies
And moonlit nights of joyful days
That kiss is what keeps me going
On days we are too tired and weak
And feel frustrated with life.
That kiss is hope of a new dawn
Of loving you
After crude words bottled inside
Erupted in the space between us
Its reaching out with a sincere apology
Of how we can move forward
Despite of our occasional grudges
We at times reserve only for each other
But I wouldn’t have it any other way
For in these flawed moments
Is when we find our love grow deeper…
We are more than sunlit afternoons
And carefully crafted love letters,
More than the poetry and the art we create…
But in this moment of playful banter,
When you ask me if I love you,
I squeeze your hand
My heart still flutters
When you squeeze back.
